Catholic Big Brothers Update 2/22
By Alex Tao | February 22, 2008
More Posts by Alex Tao
It’s been awhile since our last CBB update. The program continues to grow as more Zetas and Zeta Sisters become involved. Under a new director, Cynthia, we looking for more ways to interact with the kids. Rather than just spend an hour with them at their school. A trip to the USC campus might be a good idea, or a Lakers game.

Q: Why did you select to go to USC?
J: It was the summer after my junior year and I had no idea where I wanted to go to college. I knew I wanted to go to college in California and I wanted to try a new place since a lot of my father’s side of my family reside in the Bay Area. I visited USC and I just liked the whole vibe and atmosphere as soon as I got here. So I applied to USC later that year and I was accepted at the end of March 2005.
Q: What exactly is the meaning behind your name?
J: Julian is derived “from the same root as Julius and thus ultimately shares the Latin element related to the meaning ’sky,’ as the name Jove and Jupiter.” (courtesy of wikipedia.org)

J: I have a mom and a dad, and a younger sister. Parents did not want to have pets.

Zeta Phi Skid Rho: Operation Arrowhead
By Alex Tao | November 2, 2007
More Posts by Alex Tao
Wow, so funding is set for the event which means kicking everything into high gear. Today we got a sense of the scale of this event, and if you visit our house, you can too. What I’m referring to is the massive amount of water we spent the entire day moving.
As part of our proposal our goal was to make 4,000 bag lunches, which means… 4,000 water bottles. For some reason the school decided to order the water bottle ahead of schedule and delivered to the Student Government office. The night before they decided to let us know that we had to pick them up.
So, called into action the bros came together to transport 167 24-bottle water cases to the Greenhouse.

Casey, Randy, Izach, and Water- Lots of It
Casey picked up the transport vehicle (a U-Haul van) to carry the boxes. Luckily the boxes just made it into the van. Above you see the van parked on the street behind Carl’s Jr. Now figure the distance all the way to the Student Government office (Around the corner from mail station, past the stairs to downstairs commons). Yeah.
I had just came from the Lyon center so was short on energy, yet somehow we all managed to move everything into the van. On a mission, we just kept going.

Water, Randy, and Boxers
Did I mention we then unloaded them at the Greenhouse?
Yeah, and to add to that, we will need to move them again on the day of the event in the same manner! Until then, they fill half the kitchen and the living room. Besides making sub-par chairs, they don’t have much other use. The idea has been thrown out about oversized lego blocks, but that sounded pretty dangerous.
So the bulk of the work has just started. Operation Arrowhead is just the tip of the iceberg as we continue to make strides in what will be the biggest Zeta Phi “Skid” Rho to date.

CBB: The Halloween Spirit
By Alex Tao | November 2, 2007
More Posts by Alex Tao
CBB is becoming much more solid and regular. Now the kids remember our names and look forward to Friday’s when we come to hang out with them. Even kids who are not in the program know us and want to play too.
This past CBB featured Halloween mask making and candy. The event turned out successfully and the everyone had a good time.

Ascot Elementary Classroom Making Masks
In the end I ended up making a 300 mask and then later collaborated with Randy to make a Pikachu mask. Of course, I let my little keep them as well as smuggling some extra candy to him.
